Guidelines
The theoretical part will be devoted to lexicographic methods and how they changed throughout the history with emphasis given to the “new era” of dictionary-making influenced by new technologies. The most common types of Old English dictionary-type documents such as glossaries, concise students’ dictionaries, and comprehensive dictionaries will be explored. Another important topic will be the digitization process of dictionaries and the issues it brings, this chapter will also comment on the TEI standard for digitized texts and the changes that digitization inevitably causes to the original printed version of the text. Lastly, the focal point will be the digitized version of Bosworth and Toller’s Anglo-Saxon Dictionary1 in comparison to its “analogue” paper counterpart. This dichotomy brings issues absent in purely electronic or purely “analogue” dictionaries – the digitized version of BT should strive to stay as faithful to the original paper dictionary, yet simultaneously improve the user-friendliness and readability to be a useful tool for the research of Old English in the 21st century.
The practical part will consist mainly of qualitative comparative study of chosen entries from BT, University of Toronto’s Dictionary of Old English2 , and Clark Hall’s Concise AngloSaxon Dictionary3 , where both form and content will be compared. Emphasis will be placed on the comparison of different lexicographical approaches based on the time of genesis – BT 19th century, CASD beginning of 20th century, DOE second half of 20th century – and on the typology of the dictionaries – BT and DOE comprehensive dictionaries, CASD a concise students’ dictionary. Based on the findings both in the theoretical and the practical part of the paper some improvements to the digitization process of BT will be proposed, ranging from enhancements to the XML schema to user-guides or guides for manual editing of BT.
Práce bude vypracována v anglickém jazyce.
