This thesis will explore modern Jewish messianism and its elements in 20th-century political thought with a focus on four authors. It will discuss two German-Jewish thinkers Franz Rosenzweig, and Walter Benjamin, who represent ideas infused with messianism from the position of the Jewish exile. Additionally, the thesis will focus on the Zionist movement and will examine the messianic elements in the thought of Israel's first prime minister, David Ben-Gurion, and the messianic vision of Tzvi Yehuda Kook, the leading figure of the ultra-nationalist settler movement Gush Emunim. Specifically, the thesis will investigate how these authors perceive time and history. Traditionally, Jewish messianism often involved passively awaiting the arrival of the Messiah, but this perception shifted in the 20th century due to the altered perception of time and history within the European context. Both in theory and practice, messianism became a means by which one can transform the world around them. |
