Present seismic hazard assessments are primarily based on empirical approaches despite the progress in physics-based earthquake ground-motion modeling. The student will employ kinematic and/or dynamic rupture models to calculate ground motions due to selected real-world earthquakes. The simulations may incorporate site effects to improve the waveform and spectral fit of observed data. The used model will be used for ground motion prediction of a future earthquake in the form of a series of rupture scenarios.
